Zewdy Covers 'Jah Army'

This chick goes by the name of Zewdy, she's definitely young, but she runs ting on YouTube. She covers a lot of current pop songs, and has some wicked pipes. While the above cover of Stephen & Damian Marley's "Jah Army" doesn't necessarily showcase her vocal talents that much, she definitely brings it hard, and there are still moments where her vocal talents shine. If you ask me she does a great job on this cover, and if it weren't for the terrible sound quality, I think we would've been able to get a better idea of her skill on this track.

To really get an idea of her voice, check her full YouTube page out HERE.

Big Up to Vince for the heads up*

Stick Figure Drops New Album: Burial Ground

Stick Figure just dropped his fifth full-length album, Burial Ground, on June 12.  For those that haven't heard any of his earlier recordings, it's written, recorded, and produced all by Scott Woodruff (of Duxbury, MA).  Since the release of The Sound of My Addiction (2006), it has been impressive to see the progression of his music.  Since each instrument is recorded seperately and layered, it is cool to see the noticeable increase in complexity and quality of each album; this album continues the trend.  It should also be noted that Woodruff addred three new musicians to the live band, which might have added to the quality of the recordings.

Burial Ground certainly mantains the sound that we have learned to expect from Stick Figure.  I would describe it as a nice mixture between Reggae/Rock (Rebelution, Clear Conscience, Slightly Stoopid) with a little more Roots/Dub style than those mentioned.  One thing I have noticed is that although I really enjoy Woodruff's voice, it can make the songs blend together.  I had a hard time picking out my favorite tracks from the album, but really enjoyed it altogether as a whole.

Sample it at iTunes, and see if it's worth your money.  While you're at it, check out his older albums as well.

Throwback Series: Sistah Robi Kahakalau "Do It Twice"

A friend recently showed me a solid cover by Sistah Robi Kahakalau of Bob Marley & The Wailers "Do It Twice". I have been in love with the track ever since. A great fusion of Hawaiian Style, Roots Reggae, and Jazz. Also check out the original version!

Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival - June 30

For those in the northern California/Reno area, there is an upcoming Reggae festival that you definitely have to check out.  It is the Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival at MontBleu Outdoor Concert Pavilion in South Lake Tahoe on June 30.  The three headliners are J Boog, Pepper, and Katchafire.  Joining them on the bill is Hot Rain, Keyser Soze, The Mark Sexton Band, UpRising, and Squarefield Massive.  The different styles of reggae being represented at this festival is what I'm so stoked on.  J Boog is out of California with a ton of Hawaiian style, and can also bring a more dancehall sound.  Pepper is one of the original Hawaiian reggae bands to make it big on the mainland with their Sublime-style Reggae/Rock.  And Katchafire, of New Zealand, brings some of the smoothest harmonies you'll hear in the genre.  I'm predicting Hot Rain will be the biggest surprise of the festival.  They used to be the backing band for artists such as J Boog and Don Carlos, and now are starting to make a name for themselves on their own.  They are scheduled to be the first band of the day at 2PM, so be sure to get there early to see these Hawaiians for yourself.

Check out the festival on Facebook, and get some tickets already!

Tarrus Riley Exclusive

I knew it! Well... I guess it wasn't that hard to tell: Some gyal broke Tarrus Riley's heart, and that's why of recent months we've seen a handful of "anti-love" tracks from Singy Singy - a message that seems to contradict the man's very being, and certainly his message that has made him so popular.  Sounds like he's doing quite alright though. Just listen to his lyrics:
"Hope you're doing well without me, cus I'm doing fine without you. Hope you're doing better without me, I'm doing great without you. Guess what? I'm not missing you."
"Not Missing You" is one of four brand new, exclusive songs on the 20th anniversary edition of VP Records' Reggae Gold Series, which hits stores June 26. Big Up to LargeUp for sharing this tune.
