Musiq Soulchild & Syleena Johnson - 9ine

Just got turned on to this reggae album 9ine from R&B singer Musiq Soulchild and Syleena Johnson. I have always been a big fan of R&B vocalists layin it down on some reggae beats so definitely had to check this album out. Acouple pretty good tracks including "never had" and "Feel The Fire (Dancehall Remix)". Wanted to share an excerpt from Musiq Soulchild about the album that I felt not only describes this album, but also many others being produced within the genre of reggae today.

"Well the album just so happens to be categorized as reggae music because of the sound and the elements that we're using, the components and the arrangements and the cords. Anybody can listen to it and they can obviously tell that that it's part of the standard of music that is classified as reggae. But I think that, if I can speak for Syleena, we both entered into this project to make good music. It just so happened that we were making reggae music but our message is always the same. It's about love, it's about communication, it's about getting along with one another—not only in a relationship, but also as people, interacting with each other as human beings and just being uplifting and inspiring and also having a good time with life.

And if you are unfamiliar with Musiq Soulchild, make sure to check out one of my favorite tracks "Just Friends" from him down below!

Maxi Priest - "Easy to Love" Single

Maxi Priest has been a long time favorite of mine -- he continually delivers on these nice, airy, lovers tracks. Though he's been seemingly off the grid for a while now, it's great to see him back and preparing for  new album.

Title track is dope and produced by Damian Marley however I wanted to share my other two favorites off the EP to save the others for you to purchase for yourself on ITUNES. Music is solid and his voice is yet again on point! This guy is quickly becoming one of my more favorite vocalists in reggae today. Gyptian - "Sex, Love & Reggae"

International Reggae superstar, Gyptian, dropped his highly anticipated fourth full-length album last month!  Sex, Love and Reggae continued in the direction that we've seen from him for quite some time.  Replacing his conscious roots and culture with more of an electronic dancehall and soca experience, he hasn't lost a step.  It seems that no matter what direction he chooses he can't fail!

This album may not be suited for the "Serious Times" fans out there, but anyone in the dance halls will love it.  My favorite tracks all happen to be from the SLR EP that was released a year ago.  "Overtime", "Wine Slow", and "One More Time" are all jams!  The featured artists kill it.  Specifically the female vocalists — Angela Hunte, Melanie Fiona, and Estelle — all bring something unique to their tracks.  This album's first single, "Vixen" is already a hit, and I don't see it being the last.  You'll notice some familiar 2012 hit riddims (Kingston 13 Riddim & Live In Love Riddim) as well as a few old covers: "My Number One", from We Remember Gregory Isaacs, and Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors".

This album's one downfall is that lots of the songs had been previously released, so I wasn't surprised by too many tracks.  Not the worst thing though, and I highly recommend checking out all that this album has to offer HERE.

Third World & Tessanne Chin Re-Released on iTunes

Legendary Jamaican band, Third World, teamed up with Tessanne Chin more than two years ago with this single, "By My Side".  Well it seems that due to Chin's increasing International stardom on The Voice, iTunes wanted to cash in by throwing this tune on their Recent Releases.  Check it out HERE.  And keep an eye out for Tessanne on The Voice!  While it strays far away from Reggae, it's great to be able to support the Jamaican star.

English artist Estelle from London is definitely not a new artist on the scene, but I wanted to share her music since I been getting back into it recently. In reggae she is popularly known for her song "Come Over", however a deeper look into her discography and you'll find many more smooth jams. Love her voice and style as she definitely holds it down for the female reggae artists/vocalists. Check out some of my favorite tracks including duet with John Legend! Cheers

Album Review: Passafire - Vines

Passafire, a 4 piece band from Savannah, Georgia, yeah thats right I said Georgia, has just dropped their new album Vines under Easy-Star Records. Canʻt say I have heard a lot of their older music, but I am really enjoying the new tracks. Solid recordings and a very unique mixture of Rock and Reggae that helps these guys stand out from much of the other Reggae/Rock out there. They also have a good blend of other genres that they seamlessly incorporate into their music. Overall, I am definitely a fan of the new album. Check out a few of my favorite tracks and make sure to catch a copy for yourself off ITUNES. Respect!

Introducing: Soké

Canadian-born, Soké is a talented, young artist/producer who dubs his style of music "Cross-over Reggae," which incorporates hints of roots reggae, dancehall, electronic (very Skrillex-like) and dub. To be flat out honest, I think his riddim instrumentals are some of the best representations of modern roots reggae that I've heard in a while. His quality is consistent, and that's what sets him apart from a lot of the up-and-coming production I've heard over the past year or two. I'm dying to hear some killer vocals over these riddims! Also check out some of his fresh remixes - most notably his Collie Buddz "Come Around" remix, which completely flips the vibe of the original track while maintaining its integrity.

You can link Soké on Facebook or on his website.

Alific: "Echoes From the Soul"

A few months back, I wrote about KBong's single, In Session.  While doing this I stumbled on a collaboration with Alific, and had to check into him.  Well his album, Echoes From the Soul, has been on repeat ever since and it's about time I shared it.

When first listening to the album I found a lot of similarities to Stick Figure's sound during the time he was writing and producing albums entirely by himself.  Come to find out that Brendan Dane — the man who goes by Alific — played bass for Stick Figure in San Diego, and solely wrote and produced this recent album.  Now located in D.C., Dane continues to use Reggae influences as a means to experiment with some of the downtempo electronics that you hear in the D.C. area.  Dane says his hope for the album is that it "feels as at home on U Street DC as it does on the San Diego boardwalk." I can't speak too knowledgeably about that goal, but still feel the need to call this album a success!

Echoes From the Soul features fellow Stick Figure members, Kevin Bong and Scott Woodruff; as well as Theivery Corporation's Saxophonist, Frank Mitchell Jr., and many others.  Haile Supreme's vocals kill it on "I Wish" - a dubby cover of the Stevie Wonder classic.  From the first track (which happens to be the title-track), you can sense how unique of an experience this album will be.  "InnerCity Dubpression" is another track that really demonstrates Alific's distinctive production.

Big ups to Rootfire Records as well!!  This is their first exclusive release, and a huge one to start off on.  The guys at Rudeboy Reggae can't wait to hear more of what they have to bring to the American Reggae scene.

BONUS:  Check out this track that shows Alific's full range of talents.  He has some really tight remixes all over SoundCloud.

International Spotlight: Marky Lyrical

I love when I stumble across artists from out of country because it proves the case that reggae music has the power to relay an universal message. Although the styles may differ, as all music does, the message portrayed through reggae remains one of tranquility. Mark "Marky Lyrical" Moheny is a prime example. The Montreal, Canada native immediately caught my ears through a preview of his debut album, Stardust. After purchasing and listening to a few tracks, I knew this guy's music needed to be spread to the rest of the RudeBoy fam. Marky's gritty tone combined with a smooth delivery really gives the album a contagious feel good sound. Check out a few of my favorites below. Be sure to support Marky Lyrical and buy his DEBUT ALBUM Stardust on iTunes!

Hip Hop Homage: Wale, Drake, J Cole

Every once and a while we gotta pay homage to some of the greats in hip hop. After all, even hip hops roots lead back to reggae if you trace them far enough. These 3 artists Wale, Drake, and J. Cole are some of my top picks at the moment and these are few of my favorite tracks off their newest albums. Had to throw in the Nas remix as well of Let Nas Down. You can also see each of these guys featured on reggae tracks with some prominent artists (Drake - No Guns Allowed/Snoop Lion, J. Cole - Get Free/Major Lazer, Wale - Made In Africa/Stephen Marley). Respect to these guys for keeping it fresh!

Cham ft. Damian Marley - "Fighter"

Cham and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley team up for a hard hitting sound in the single "Fighter".

Keznamdi & Don Corleon - "Grade"

In a move that I couldn't have been more excited to see, Keznamdi has teamed up with legendary producer Don Corleon on his most recent single, "Grade".  Since Bridging the Gap, I've been keeping an eye out for this Bay Area resident.   Corleon's classic upbeat dubby riddim really showcases Kez's style, and his vocals are perfect on this ganja anthem.

Check out the promo for the track.  And buy the single HERE.

Introducing: Indubious

I recently stumbled upon these guys and immediately became a fan. Hailing from Southern Oregon, Indubious boasts a high powered fusion of dub, roots, electronica, and dancehall which they self-dubbed, "RootsTronica". These "Intergalactic Reggae Revolutionaries" consist of brothers Evton B (keys & vocals) and Skip Wicked (bass & vocals) Burton, and drummer Matty T. Wells.

Having being born with Cystic Fibrosis, the Burton brothers had a life expectancy of only 18 years. Their outlook on life was immediately changed at a young age. Yet the brothers continue to fight and use their diagnosis to fuel their passion for their art and spread good vibes with their music. BIG UPS!!!

Indubious has already produced three solid albums: Fresh Leaves (2008), Cosmic Seeds (2009), and their recently released project Wake the Lion (2013). All three of which showcases their unique genre bending sound. Check out their INSANE music video for "Seventh Generation" off of their recently released album below as well as "Presto Chango" off of their sophomore album. Be sure to show these guys some love by purchasing their music on iTunes or www.indubiousmusic.com .

Can't go wrong with Wash House Music, Peetah Morgan and Lion Fyah!!

Roots Corner: First Reggae Tracks

Reading up on the origins of reggae and I discovered that these tracks are credited as being some of the first reggae songs ever produced. In those times (late 1960's), the music was coming out of a rapidly evolving ska/rocksteady scene. Really cool to hear that original and raw sounds and definitely makes you think about how far the music has come. But no matter what, can't forget the ROOTS!

"In a sense reggae combines all the previous forms of Jamaican popular music - the ska riff on top of a slowed down rocksteady bass line with a dash of mento influence. Rastafarian influences were heard in increasingly pointed spiritual, social and political commentary." ~ Reggae Routes by Kevin O'Brien Chang and Wang Chen

Alborosie: Sound The System

Depending on where you are in the world, Alborosie's new album, Sound The System, is unreleased or a few months old. Either way, the pioneer of the Italian reggae scene has got some new jams. My favorites are most of the tracks with featured artists and "Shut U Mouth". Gotta love his unique style and commanding vocals. Can't wait to see this guy live cause Ive heard his live set is unreal! Find more at alborosieofficial.com and check out the new album on ITUNES! Enjoy the music below. RESPECT

KBong New Single: "In Session"

KBong released another single off of his upcoming debut album, Hopes and Dreams.  Featuring EN Young, "In Session" is a really nice follow up track that continues to show promise for this album.  This tune is definitely different from his first single, "Rising", in that it is much dubbier and less pop-sounding.  It's nice to hear the variation in singles, which shows me the range of what to expect from this album.  Can't wait!

As a reminder... "Rising".

Pick Your Style: Bizzarri Sound and Yaadcore Mixtapes

Two recent hour-long mixes from Italian-based, Bizzarri Sound, and Jamaica's Yaadcore have grabbed my attention.  I love how there are so many different styles of Reggae and these two mixes do a great job portraying the polar opposites that it has to offer.  Bizzarri Sound brings us an upbeat, strictly dancehall mix titled, "Who Run Di Dance?" featuring artists like Alborosie, Jah Sun, and Bizzari Record's own, Lion D.  Yaadcore provides an ode to Emperor Haile Selassie's 121st birthday in a old-school roots classic, "Hail Ras Tafari Vol. 1: Tribe of Judah" with artists like Israel Vibration, Luciano, and Black Uhuru.  In a rare move, he starts off with over nine minutes of Nyahbinghi drumming and chanting.  While it may be a little excessively long, it is awesome way to set the tone for the next hour of Reggae.  Technically, both mixes are flawlessly done.

Check out more from Bizzarri Records and DJ Yaadcore.

Hip Hop Homage: Sergio Mendes - Timeless

Ever since Big L of Hot Rain showed me the album Timeless last weekend, it has been on repeat. Anyone who loves reggae, knows how many musical styles out their complement the genre, and thus I can't help but feel obligated to share not just reggae, but other great music that has appeal to reggae lovers. This album was released in 2006 by Brazilian Artist Sergio Mendes and American Rapper Will.I.Am and features a solid collection of hip-hop and neo-soul artists. I love the brazilian samba style mixed with smooth jazz, some sick beats, and top notch vocalists. Enjoy just a few of my favorite tracks and grab the album for yourself off ITUNES. This music truly is timeless. Perfect music for any occassion. Muito Bom!

Common Kings - Summer Anthems EP

Common Kings are back at it again releasing their second EP Summer Anthems. Good to see these guys hitting the studio hard and producing some perfect summer tunes before its over! Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown & Macka B - "Jealousy Remixed"

It's always a good idea to keep an eye on Necessary Mayhem Records to see what they're up to.  Known for hard hitting riddims and unique, well done remixes, this production group is now celebrating a very successful six years of existence.  I just stumbled on the remix, "Jealousy" where they brought Macka B in on Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown's original track, and had to share.

If this new school remix of old school Reggae is your thing, make sure to check out the full album, Necessary Mayhem Presents Gregory Isaacs Remixed.  Whereas Legends Remixed attempts to bring Electronic music and Reggae together, Necessary Mayhem simply brings an updated, fresh version of Isaacs' original tracks that very much keeps it in the Reggae genre.

Gyptian: "Vixen"

Gyptian's coming hard again with the first single off of his upcoming album, Sex, Love & Reggae. "Vixen" features songwriter and vocalist, Angela Hunte, and the two of them really work nicely off each other.  This track is more of the dancehall variety, which we have have seen almost exclusively from Gyptian recently.  I'd love it if he brought it back to some Roots & Culture for the album, but either way, you know he's going to impress.

Make sure to check out the album release in October 2013.

Dope new(ish) single from Hawaiian reggae band Rebel Souljahz. Love the drumbeat rythm style on this one. Hit up ITUNES for your copy. Also since were at it, figured I'd throw in the new music video for the single "Play Me Like A Fool". A bit scandalous so careful showing to the young ones! Reespect

Mighty Mystic Single: "Concrete World"

I've had the opportunity to see Mighty Mystic in concert twice now and both times he has been very impressive. The Boston-based artist continues to excel with the release of "Concrete World" — a nice culture track in which Mystic's vocals shine over the solid work of his backing band, Thunder Band.

Make sure to look out for him while he works on the TOURS of Morgan Heritage and Soul Rebel Project.

Album Review: The Green - Hawai'i '13

4 years ago when I first heard The Green's music, it only took one listen to know that this band was something else. Reggae has been a musical bloodline in Hawai'i for over 30 years now, and it was only a matter of time before a sound that epitomized Hawaiian reggae would come along. But now that it's here, it seems that even the expectations of the past aren't able to live up to what The Green has become. In less than 5 years, this band has taken the genre by storm and put forth an unrivaled sound that is defining the future, capturing the present, and preserving the past.

In the age of singles and one hit wonders, it is a true blessing to see an album that is so well put together from the musicianship and songwriting all the way to the production and artwork.  Of course, it takes a powerful team to create such a product, and thus was the result of recordings at Hurley Studios in Costa, Mesa California, production by Danny Kalb (also known for his work with artists like Ben Harper and Jack Johnson) and bass player Brad Watanabe, artwork from Kamea Hadar, oversight from Easy Star Records, and guidance from Rootfire

As for the album itself, good luck finding music on Hawai'i '13 that you don't absolutely love. The diversity of songs and styles have something for everyone, yet the flow of the music seamlessly connects the entire album together from the Hawaiian chant "He Mele No Ku'u Hawai'i" that opens it to the state anthem "Hawai'i Aloha" that brings it to a close. Each of the 4 singer/songwriters came strong as ever, putting forth not only their art and craft, but music that embodies the Hawaiian culture and spirit, helping spread the vibe and share the voice from a small island in the middle of the ocean all around the world. All in all, the envelope has been pushed once again, and who knows where it will take them this time.

This album and this band make me proud to be from Hawai'i and part of a place that for being so small has had contributed so greatly to the realm of music.
