Album Review: 'Judgement Time' by Chezidek

Ok, yes, I know I'm way behind on the 8 ball with this one - I'll be the first to admit it - but damn was I impressed with this album! I would be doing a disservice to the Rudeboy Massive if I didn't do a review of this album, "Judgement Time," coming from the rastaman, Chezidek. Whether you're a fan of Chezidek or not, I think we can all agree on one thing: he has one of the most unique voices in reggae music today. From there, it's a matter of personal opinion as to whether his voice does it for you or not. For me, to be honest, I used to dislike Chezidek because I felt like he could never quite harness his talents and hit the notes he was trying to hit. But with this album, I have to say, I think his vocals are flawless, and I'm a huge fan of every song, which is something I don't often say about reggae albums.

Judgement Time (2010) was produced and brought to you by JahSolidRock. Alongside Chezidek's top-notch vocal performance throughout this album, its the premier production that especially makes this album great. Many of the tracks on here are accompanied by dubby version tracks, which are nicely mixed and add a little something extra to the experience of this album. And, above all, the lyrics on this album have a positive message and cary a nice, uplifting vibe.

I can declare with certainty that this album is a must-have for any reggae lover's collection. After running through the track list just once, I without a doubt now consider myself a Chezidek fan.

Tarrus Riley & John Legend Duet @ JA Jazz Fest

Two superstars (in particular) shared the stage last week during Jamaica's Jazz & Blues Festival - their names, Tarrus Riley and John Legend. You may recall the song they tackled together from Riley's Sophomore album, "Parables," a cover of Legend's hit song, "Stay With You." I would have loved to be at this performance, I can tell you that much. The vocal talent on this stage is through the roof! Let's hope this leads to another collaboration between the two in the future.

Introducing: KBong

KBong grew up in Hawaii surrounded by musical rhythm and harmonies.  Listening to all the Jamaican legends you would expect, he soon learned the positivity of Reggae music.  Now, after living in San Diego, it's the American Reggae scene influencing his music. For the last three years he's been playing the keyboard and singing behind Scott Woodruff and the rest of Stick Figure.  Now a solo album is the next chapter.  Bong says, "It is an accumulation of what I've learned from the others around me and my experiences."  Hopes and Dreams is set to drop in Spring 2013, and from the first single, "Rising", it promises to be worth checking out.  With help from members of Stranger, Stick Figure, and Fortunate Youth, the album could have more of a Cali-reggae sound, but either way I'm excited to hear the product!

Visit his Facebook, Bandcamp and Soundcloud for more videos and music.  And make sure to check him out with Stick Figure on Tribal Seeds' West Coast tour.

Warrior King in Lake Tahoe!!

Big things are happening up in Lake Tahoe, CA!!  Rambo Party Productions and Tweed Rolling Papers are putting on a Bob Marley Birthday Celebration which is going to be tough to top.  That's because they managed to get the Jamaican legend, Warrior King, to perform, backed by DubFyah of FullWatts HiFi.  Make sure to catch the local DJ Treez opening the set!  For those that are in the area, I can't stress how important it is to check out this show.  Not only will Warrior King go down as one of the best, but this is an opportunity to see him in a very personal setting with a modest (but rowdy, I'm sure) crowd.

Warrior King has released four albums since 2002, but personally, there is no doubt that his best work was his earliest.  Nothing against his later albums, I just need to stress that his first two albums — Virtuous Woman(2002) and  Hold the Faith(2005) — are two of the best Reggae albums of ALL TIME.  From start to finish, they hold the standard for uplifting, positive, conscious roots Reggae music to this day.  My only hope is that he still enjoys playing some of those songs on February 8th at Hacienda del Lago in Tahoe City, CA.

Jah Cure: "Jah Rule The Universe"

Jah Cure links up with RPR Music Production to produce his new single, "Jah Rule The Universe" off of the Izes Riddim. This record is pretty smooth - classic Jah Cure vocals, with a sharp horn section, which always ads a nice touch.

New Roots Singles From Raging Fyah: "Raging Dread" & "Nah Look Back

Roots reggae group, Raging Fyah, just recently released its first two singles of the new year, titled, "Raging Dread" (above), and "Nah Look Back" (Below). I'm a big fan of these guys, and love their style of music. Both tracks feature some solid vocals and quality production - Raging Dread, a nice mix of dubby roots, and Nah Look Back more of the upbeat roots style Raging Fyah is known for. Both tracks give you an idea of how musically versatile this group can be.

Stick Figure on West Coast Tour with Tribal Seeds

At this point, Stick Figure should be of no surprise to anyone on the American Reggae scene.  After almost seven years and five quality studio albums (especially Burial Ground), they have certainly proved their worth.  To my surprise however, they find themselves on only their second tour this winter.  Fortunately for them, the headliner is Tribal Seeds, so it is sure to be a crazy few weeks.  Click the banner on the right to find all the tour dates.  And hopefully keep an eye out for some ticket giveaways coming up through Rudeboy.

New Single: Jah Cure - "I Do"

Reggae superstar, Jah Cure, recently linked up with legendary procuder, Don Corleon, on his newest single titled, "I Do." The record is unlike anything I've heard from the lab of Don Corleone, and tip-toes on the edge of mainstream Pop. It's a pretty catchy track, and definitely plays into the style of Reggae we've seen more and more from Cure.

Pacific Pulse: SIAOSI - Everything Is Good

***Purchase on ITUNES or AMAZON***

Polynesian artist SIAOSI out of Hawaii has released a new EP titled Everything Is Good. The EP has some nice new jams and includes his recent singles "All I Need" ft. Jah Maoli and "If You Were Mine." Gotta love his smooth blend of R&B and Reggae as well as that old school flavor he occasionally mixes into his sound. Check out the tracks for yourself and one of my favorites "Family Ties" which features lyrics in Tongan (if I'm not mistaken) and traditional drums. Don't forget to catch this guy performing live if you ever get the chance, one of my favorite artists I've seen perform acoustic, or on Tour with the Hot Rain & J-Boog crew!
