AOTM: Aaron Kamm and the One Drops - "The Bomb and the Beast"

With this recent rise in quality American Reggae, it seems that a bulk of the bands are coming out of the California/Hawaii area.  Of course there are exceptions all over the country, but it is this strong Reggae scene in Missouri that has me interested.  Aaron Kamm and the One Drops, 77 Jefferson, Josh Heinrichs and the guys from Jah Roots are a few of the examples in mind.   Some stay more ‘true’ to the Reggae genre than others but it is this variation that I love so much.  It has provided us with an odd blending of styles that results in a new, unique flavor for our ears.

Specifically, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops, out of St. Louis, is a band I’ve been listening to for years and have wanted to write about for just as long.  Finally, I decided I would feature their most recent album (March ‘12), The Bomb and the Beast, for this month’s installment of Rudeboy Reggae’s Album of the Month.

From their first two albums, Gnu-Gnu (Dec '08) and Grow (Dec '09), these guys have set themselves apart with a really nice, unique mix of Reggae and Mississippi River Blues.   I honestly can’t think of another band that comes close to resembling their style.  With positive messages, upbeat tempos, and an ability to produce catchy tunes, these guys have been the perfect warm summer day music for me.  Aaron Kamm's distinctive vocals is another aspect that makes this band so unique, but I could imagine listeners could either love it or hate it. Their style seems well suited for an entertaining outdoor concert, and after checking out some videos and reviews of their live shows, I haven’t heard anything to disagree.  For some reason, they haven’t made it all that big, and I’m not sure why.  They don’t tour much outside of the Midwest, but I don’t see that lasting for too long.  Keep an eye out for these guys!
