Da'Ville - "Mirrors" Remix

Da'Ville, in association with Silly Walks Discotheque & Junior Blender, present a pretty smooth remix of Justin Timberlake's, "Mirrors." Now, I'm not a big JT fan, but I'd say this is a nice take on a current pop hit - really a perfect tune for Da'Ville to voice a remix on. I gotta assume this one's mainly for the lady Rudeboy's, but I think all can appreciate it.

Music Video: Protoje ft. Kabaka Pyramid: "Warrior"

A real rasta chant, "Warrior" is a spiritual and righteous jam for all the true gideon soliders. I really dig Kabaka Pyramid on this song - an artist who has recently taken the reggae scene by storm. He does a nice job highlighting his vocal and lyrical talents here and really steals the show from Protoje, if you ask me.

Song produced by ZincFence Recordz, video directed by Pierce "Daddy P" McLean and Andrew "Dru" Jackson.

LEGEND REMIXED Trailer

Just released today is the trailer for the Bob MarleyLEGEND REMIXED project. Some big names such as Stephen and Ziggy Marley and Lee 'Scratch' Perry are getting involved on this album, but as you can also see from the trailer above, there are some serious electronic/dubstep and dub influences that will be featured on the production. I'm really looking forward to this album - it sounds like they took a step outside the box on this one to give us something different, which I think says a lot, if you consider how many thousands of times these same songs have been remixed.

Introducing: Raphie

Hailing from Huntington Beach, CA, Raphie's style strives to achieve a late-70's, early-80's roots reggae vibe. My assessment: Mission Accomplished! Close your eyes and listen to either one of these tracks below, and immediately you're immersed in the iconic, rootsy, dubby style of reggae from that time period. My first thought when I heard Raphie was, "This kid sounds like a modern day Gregory Isaacs."

Phenomenal production quality and undeniably unique vocals are the cornerstone of this young up-and-comer's campaign to keep traditional roots reggae alive. Excited to listen to the rest of his upcoming album, "Roots Sensation," release date, TBD.

Music Video: Now That You Got It - Gwen Stefani ft. Damian Marley

Not sure if this is new or old, but I just found it and I dig it so I thought Id share. The track is "Now That You Got It" by Gwen Stefani ft. Damian Marley. For all of the guest appearances Damian does, I dont think I've ever been disappointed! Make sure to catch him on his upcoming tour with Stephen Marley

Tarrus Riley & JukeBoxx Productions — "The Limit"

The latest Tarrus Riley single comes from JukeBoxx Productions.  It's good to hear such a smooth love jam from Tarrus again.  Making me reminisce on other classics like "Intimate Reservation"  - it almost seems like it's been too long from the legend...

Marley Africa Road Trip

A friend recently turned me on to the six part series Marley Africa Road Trip. The mini series follows brothers Ziggy, Rohan, and Robbie Marley as they ride motorcycles through Africa during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The journey, inspired by their fathers vision of African unity, gives a great window into the Marley legacy in Africa as well as the lives of 3 of his children as they attempt to hold a free concert to celebrate Bob's music 30 years after his own expedition to Africa to play at the Zimbabwe Independence Concert. So far I have really enjoyed the show, and especially getting to know Ziggy beyond his music. Also cool to see some of the lesser known Marley son's doing their thing outside the world of music. I highly recommend for anyone interested and must admit that I now have a desire to roadtrip on a motorcycle as well. Check it out on NETFLIX and find out more info at Marleyafricaroadtrip.com. As the motto of the journey goes.. "Only The Willing"

Markus Records: Insecurity Riddim

Markus Records, which is headed up by Mark Myrie, the eldest son of Buju Banton, presents a smooth, brand new modern roots riddim: The Insecurity Riddim. Voicing some talented, young artists such as Romain Virgo, Christopher Martin and Chuck Fender (all on the mix above, in that order), I rate this selection pretty high. The vibe is pretty low key, but is highlighted by a heavy bass line, subtle, jazzy flute chords and some retro synthy undertones, all of which play nicely into the above artists' stylings.

Marlon Asher ft. Slightly Stoopid: "Ganja Farmer"

Legendary ganja man, Marlon Asher, recently teamed up with Slightly Stoopid to release a wicked acoustic version of his famous song, "Ganja Farmer." For a song that's been redone and covered dozens of times, I think I've gotta say this one is my favorite that I've heard to date. It really doesn't need much of an introduction - just a very solid production over all, and a collaboration that I think worked out perfectly!

Josh Heinrichs, founder of Missouri based independant reggae label GanJah Records, recently released a new EP titled Rooftop Session. The compilation includes an acoustic version of his popular cover "Set Fire To The Rain," some new music, and guest appearances from Skillinjah. Great to hear some fresh sounds from one of the Mid-West's most notable reggae solo artists. EP was recorded live and direct taking the best cuts from each version to provide that raw feel to it that cant help but highlight Heinrichs unique vocals. Check out the EP for yourself on ITUNES or joshheinrichs.com and big ups to Josh and the GanJah records crew!

Introducing: Keznamdi

Generally, the US iTunes Top 20 Reggae Albums are unexcitingly filled with old classics and big names — tons of Marley's, multiple Rebelution and SOJA albums, Collie Buddz, etc.  That is why it struck my interest when I saw an unfamiliar name like Keznamdi at #17, with his EP, Bridging the Gap.  To see quality artists Chronixx and Kabaka Pyramid getting involved was also a clear indication that this could be something special.

After listening to the quick 19 minute EP, I was extremely impressed.  Often you will see an EP from a newer artist with only one or two quality song; Kez brought it on all six.  His voice has similarities to Ziggi Recado and Jr. Gong, while his lyrics are deeply conscious and positive.  The production from Higher Intelligence absolutely killed it.  Overall, they kept it more of a contemporary, hip/hop reggae style, which seems to be a pattern in recent culture reggae.  But slowing it down on "My Love for You" was perfect, and the almost-dubstep, dancehall beat for "Weekend" is a good way to get Keznamdi's name out there on the radio stations and in the clubs.

All I can say is keep an eye out for this guy.  Not sure if someone could have more of a Reggae family and upbringing with the McDonald's.  His parents are the two lead singers in Chakula, his sister, Kamila (Miss Jamaica 2009) is married to Jah Cure, and his other sister, Kelissa is a recording artist as well.  Growing up on the road and in the recording studio, Keznamdi knows what it takes to succeed.  He certainly has the drive and the talent.  It will be a treat to see what he brings us on his upcoming full-length album.

Buy Bridging the Gap on iTunes.

Album Review: Jah Sun, "Rise As One"

It seems like it was just the other day that Jah Sun released his critically-acclaimed album, "Battle the Dragon." Now, just over a year later, the Austin, TX native is back with a brand new, 15-track production titled "Rise As One" - his best work yet - that is sure to reserve his seat at the head table alongside today's best reggae artists, once and for all.

There's a lot I like about this album - or, perhaps better put, there's absolutely nothing I don't like about this album. Jah Sun really hit a home run this time around. From front to back, Rise As One is a superb roots album, with fantastic, intricate musical production, and an overarching positive and insightful message that we've come to expect from Jah Sun. Rise As One features some high-profile collaborations with some of today's hottest artists, such as Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid, Sizzla, Richie Spice and Gappy Ranks. Listening to the tracks featuring these artists, its clear that Jah Sun put a lot of thought into what songs he wanted these particular artists to feature on, as the production that each appears on plays to their specific vocal and lyrical talents.

Rise As One, which was released at the end of April on Jah Sun's own label, More Love Productions, is truly a must-have for any reggae fan -- especially for anyone with a respect and understanding of the roots. Throughout much of this album, the musical production (and vocals) gives a tip of the cap to the  roots reggae stylings that helped make the reggae genre what it is today - you can clearly hear it in the vibe of certain tracks, as well as in the particular instruments that are used, e.g. "Wicked Nah Go Win," "Roots Rock Reggae," and "Rise As One."

International Spotlight: Natiruts

Its crazy to think of how far and wide reggae has spread. In an effort to share more reggae music from around the world, Id like to introduce a new segment called International Spotlight. However, we will definitely be needing the help of our fans to point us in the right direction, so donʻt hesitate to share your favorite artists and bands with us that you think fit this section!

I will start with Brazilian reggae band introduced to me recently, Natiruts. Now, I wasn't able to find out a whole lot about the band's history, nor do I know what the song is singing about, but none the less I dig the vibe and apparently so do many others with over 2 million hits on youtube for this track "O Carcará E A Rosa". Enjoy the album version and acoustic music video. Big ups to the Brazilian reggae massive! Look forward to hearing more music!
