Cultural Spotlight: Project Kuleana

Its no secret that Hawaii has a strong affinity to reggae music. However, not everyone may be aware of the many other genres of music that live and flourish in Hawaii, especially traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music, which have undoubtedly influenced the reggae produced in the islands. I wanted to share this video of "Kaulana Na Pua" produced by Project Kuleana because its awesome as well as to show fans of Hawaiian reggae one of the significant musical influences that help inspire the genres unique sounds. The song is about the opposition to the annexation of Hawaii to the US back in the late 1800's and you can find translation here. As you'll see, the theme of Project Kuleana is to promote lokahi (unity), kuleana (responsibility), and aloha 'aina (love for the land), values similar to that of reggae, by bringing some of Hawaii's best musicians together to play music. Enjoy!
