Playing For Change

Absolutely love this concept. If you havenʻt seen these videos make sure to check out more at playingforchange.com or the Playing For Change Youtube Channel. They also have a charity/non-profit you can learn more about at playingforchange.org if you'd like to support the movement.  Check out a few of the videos below! MUCH ALOHA!!!

~ "Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to share it with the world."

Pacific Pulse: Sammy J

Finally had to share some music from the rising Pacific reggae artist Sammy J, from Brisbane, Australia. I wanted to post about this guys killer voice a while back but just never got around to it. Now he is starting to get his name out internationally, especially here in Hawaii where his track "Give Me All" ft Fiji has been all over the radio. Watch out for much more to come from this guy as he drops his new EP Prelude August 6 and takes off on a few tour dates. More info found on his facebook at facebook.com/sammyjmusik! Respect!

BOOM TUNE OF THE WEEK

It's so nice, we're gonna play the same song twice.

Tarrus Riley (with JukeBoxx Productions) released this killer single, "The Limit," in May. When it first came out, we posted about it immediately, but since then have unfortunately forgot about it. Until now!

It's a very different sound than we've come to expect from this duo, but Tarrus absolutely murders the vocals here. Enjoy.

"Legend Remixed" Drops

One of the most anticipated album releases of the summer was definitely Stephen Marley's project, Legend Remixed.  Now this obviously isn’t the first time Bob’s been remixed— Chant Down Babylon being one of my all-time favorite albums — but it is the first of it’s kind.  This collaboration project between a dozen legendary producers remixing each song off the original Legend album is something very different.  From Stephen and Ziggy Marley to Pretty Lights and Beats Antique.  From Thievery Corporation to Z-Trip, these producers are all over the map!  And it certainly leads to a unique album experience.  Throughout, there is such dissimilarity from one song to the next; it results in quite the variety of music.  Some keep it more in Bob’s original style (“Three Little Birds” remixed Stephen Marley and Jason Bentley), and some deviate from it completely (“Is This Love” remixed by Jason Bentley).  Having said that, the Reggae purist will certainly have issues with the latter style of production — or maybe just the whole concept in general.  Whereas Chant Down Babylon brought hip-hop and Reggae together, Legend Remixed is very much of a Reggae/Electronic blend.  It is pretty lenient to even describe Reggae as a genre during most points in this album, honestly.

There will definitely be some that despise this album from the start, due to the fact that they are altering one of the best albums of all time.  I’m not going to argue against that.  But the talent and creativity that is shown throughout is obviously impressive.  And the ability to continue spreading Bob’s messages through completely different styles of music is something that I think Bob could appreciate.   Think back to different stages of his career, and how he altered his style to push into new markets and spread his message even farther; this could be argued to be a similar effort.  If it takes an Electronic album like this for someone to get his or her first taste of Bob Marley (god save them…) than this album has succeeded.

Nothing will ever be better than the original, but you should definitely take the time to see how you feel about this new edition to the Marley musical adventure.  Check it out on iTunes here.  Also, I realize people coming to Rudeboy Reggae aren't looking for a Dubstep track, I just thought it was interesting that Stephen Marley did the "Buffalo Soldier" remix, and that is what resulted. It really shows off the range of his producing skill set.

Stephen Marley ft. Busy Signal: "You and Me Attract"

Following-up his recent single with brother Damian, "Bongo Nyah," Stephen Marley is back again with another high-profile collaboration, this time with Busy Signal - the track titled "You And Me Attract." The two singles are very similar in style and vibe, and in light of the upcoming release of Stephen's third solo album, Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life, I'm curious if we'll see more of this inclination for dancehall and hip-hop than we're used to seeing in Stephen's previous work.

Jesse Serwer of LargeUp.com compares Stephen on this track to the Kanye West circa 808s & Heartbreak, and I think he's spot on. What do you think?

Common Kings Release New EP

Orange County's Polynesian R&B/Reggae group, Common Kings, continue their tear through the music scene with the release of their latest EP, #Weontour Soundtrack.  As the title indicates, this is the soundtrack to their fire musicmentary, which follows them on their recent International tour.  These guys continue to impress not only with their smooth vocals and feel good beats, but the variety they show throughout the five-song EP is a nice surprise.  "Fall in Love" and "The Light" have to be my two favorites.  Check em out here.

Also, these guys are nominated for SEVEN awards at the 2nd Annual Fobbnation Music Awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year, for "Wade in Your Water".  Show your support for these guys and vote here!

Also make sure to check them out on their West Coast/HI and Australia/NZ tours throughout the fall.

Fat Freddy's Drop: Black Bird

Amongst the mix of new album releases is Fat Freddy's Drop with Blackbird. Gotta love Fat Freddy's style with the smooth vocals, ultra strong horn section, dubbed out songs, and that signature FFD feel that they give to their music. My picks were "Russia," "Blackbird," and "Bones," but get a copy off iTunes to find yours.  These guys are on a pretty insane international tour run so make sure to check the dates for a venue near you at fatfreddysdrop.com. Big ups to Fat Freddy's for spreading Pacific reggae all over the world!

Alborosie Sound The System Singles

Good news: Alborosie just dropped 2 singles off his upcoming album Sound The System
Bad news: Album release date has been postponed until October 1st, 2013.

Until then your going to have to enjoy these teasers, "Play The Fool" and "Rock The Dancehall". Pretty interesting reading through the press kit and I learned that Alborosie produced all the tracks on the album and played 90% of the accompanying instrumental parts. Look forward to guest appearances from Ky-Mani Marley on the Bob Marley classic Zion Train and Italian star Nina Zilli on the Ska flavored track Goodbye as well as The legendary Abyssinians on Give Thanks. Music Video: Busy Signal - "Jah Love"

The music video for Busy Signal's "Jah Love" was just released - a pretty low-key video for one of the better singles off of Busy's latest album, "Reggae Music Again." While the video is nothing impressive, the song itself it just another testament to why Busy Signal is one of the most versatile Jamaican artists today.

AOTM: Damian "Jr.Gong" Marley - Welcome To Jamrock

After watching Damian Marley perform alongside his brothers Stephen and Julian Marley and The Ghetto Youth's crew for four shows on his American tour, theres just about no way I wasn't going to give Welcome To Jamrock AOTM for July. I've realized that many of our posts and AOTM feature brand new music, so I think its time to start shedding more light on the music that has really defined the contemporary reggae genre, even if its not hot off the press. I have been listening to this album since high school and its still one of my all time favorites. Jr. Gong's music (much of which is produced by his older brother Stephen) couldn't give a better representation of the next generation style of the genre with lyrics still as potent and political as those of his father. Theres not much more I can say that will do the exceptional music of this album justice besides telling you that if you don't have Welcome To Jamrock, get it. Enjoy a few of my favorite tracks above and make sure to also check out his most recent single, "Affairs Of The Heart", which is our single of the month.

P.S. Don't hesitate to see the whole crew performing live and direct if you ever get a chance for the show of a lifetime! While watching I couldn't help and not only admire the surreal performance I was witnessing but also ponder how The Marley lineage may be one of those historic families that will be revered and celebrated thousands of years from now. To get the opportunity to see them in person is really something special.  Them alongside legendary reggae band Third World sold out the Hollywood Bowl last night in LA (18,000+), giving the world a great indication of how strong reggae music truly still is even to this day.  Maximum respect to Damian, Stephen, Julian, Christopher Ellis, Wayne Marshall, Jo Mersa, Black Am I and the rest of the Ghetto Youths Crew as well as the man whose legacy we all continue by listening, playing, and sharing reggae music... Bob Marley!!! One Love
