Nneka Releases Music Video: "Book of Job"

Back in 2012, I did a quick review of Nneka's third album, Soul is Heavy.  It took me by surprise, and impressed me with its powerful energy and lyrical content throughout.  For that reason, I was so excited to hear that she is set to release a new album, My Fairy Tales, in March 2015.  Here is the music video for her first single of the album, "Book of Job".  Enjoy!

SOJA ft. J Boog and Anuhea: Easier (Music Video)

Big music video just released from SOJA!  "Easier" is off of their most recent album, Amid the Noise and Haste, and features J Boog and Anuhea.  I can't imagine how much fun those guys had shooting this video back in Hawaii.  And as usual, Adam Leeman & Jon Jon Augustavo killed it directing -- they couldn't have portrayed the vibe of the song much better.

EP: Eli-Mac - Dubstop EP

Wow! That pretty much sums up this EP. Its been an honor and pleasure at Rudeboy Reggae to be involved with the launching of this debut project "Dubstop EP" for Hawaii artist Eli-Mac. With production by Live Animaux (Leslie Ludiazo - J-Boog & JP Kennedy - The Green) the high caliber sounds out of the gates are no surprise. Easily one of the most diverse yet well put together compilation of music for an EP I have heard in a while, maybe even ever for a female reggae artist. Am I biased? Who cares. Listen to this album and you'll see what Im talking about. Pretty crazy that just about every single song off the EP has already been in rotation on Hawaii radio. Mad respect to Eli-Mac!!! Cant wait to see what the future has in store for this quickly rising female solo artist. Make sure to buy your copy on iTunes and check her out on The Collision Tour with The Green &   J-Boog starting next month. Dates can be found at elimacofficial.com

Album: Groundation - A Miracle

Is it possible to ever go wrong with the music of Groundation? Of course not. I consider Groundation as not only one of the pioneer American reggae acts but also one of the most consistent reggae bands of our generation. Not one album or show have I ever been disappointed and I think that is quite the testament to the musical legacy of Groundation. The new project, A Miracle, has everything we've come to expect from Groundation's music and a listen through the album will certainly leave you better off then you were before listening to it. Big ups to these guys for always coming through! Make sure to buy on iTunes & support the movement. Respect!

Bob Marley Legend Reaches #5 on Billboard Mainstream Charts!

The best selling reggae album of all time just achieved another milestone last week by reaching #5 on the Billboard Charts, selling over 40,000 copies in a week due to a price discount from Google Play. Just goes to show how timeless Marley's music is, still having the power to stay on mainstream charts decades after the music being released. I can't help but imagine how Marley's music would be received today if he was a new artist emerging onto the scene with music never heard before. If that were the case, I still think his music would rise to the top considering his catchy hooks, captivating sound, and universal message. Tons of respect for this music! One Love

Roots Corner: Peter Tosh - Get Up Stand Up (Acoustic)

Acoustic track from the roots archive of "Get Up Stand Up" by Peter Tosh. Figured Id throw in the original since we posted the Aotearoa remix version a couple posts back. And since on the topic of voting, its interesting that reggae although a highly political music, tends to stay fairly neutral when it comes to endorsing political parties. I wonder what would happen if reggae was able to motivate the younger generations to go out and elect a younger political candidate who was a true leader that made changes to genuinely benefit the masses of people and wasn't down for the corruption that has polluted politics. After all, in a democracy, the people are the ones with the power.. who says it couldn't be the younger ones calling some shots.  Just some food for thought.

Romain Virgo covers Sam Smith: "Stay With Me"

I guess when an artist is blowing up as fast as R&B/pop artist, Sam Smith, they get attention from all genres -- including Reggae.  I can't complain!  Other than maybe Tarrus Riley, Romain Virgo would be my choice of vocals to do the job.  It's tough to compete with the original, but I'd say he kills it!  The Digicel Rising Star winner's talent is hard to miss.

They certainly didn't hesitate on pumping out the music video, and the quick 50,000 views supports that effort.  Let's see how big it can get.

SOJA Drops New Album - Amid The Noise & Haste

SOJA released their newest album today, Amid The Noise & Haste. The album is certainly what we've come to expect from the modern day SOJA sound & features some big artists like Michael Franti & Damian Marley. Check out our favorite tracks above & be sure to support them by purchasing the album on ITUNES!

Looking at the bands history, its pretty impressive to consider not only how far the band has come and how long it took to get there, but that they have stuck together playing music as SOJA for 17 years now. Looking at SOJA, a band at the very forefront of contemporary reggae, I can't help but wonder where do they go from here? Whats next? SOJA has always been committed to positive, political, and conscious lyrics that deliver a fearless message to listeners. Perhaps, they'll find a way to turn their visions into real world action. Seems like a logical next step for a reggae band whose already achieved what most bands in the genre can only dream of. Hopefully the new album helps make some serious waves in the world of music & can turn more ears toward a genre that grows bigger by the second. Massive respect!

Introducing: Osiris Fire

Hailing from Boston, MA, Osiris Fire is made up of a collection of 9 students at Berklee College of Music. Led by a killer 4-member horn section, these guys have more of an instrumental style reggae, lacking any dominant vocals. If they could lock down some powerful pipes to join the crew, and make it an even 10 members, I think they could really start cranking out some quality production. That said, I do enjoy the sound they have currently -- it very much resembles John Brown's Body, with a dash of electronic/futuristic spice here and there.

The video above is of their latest single release, "Shacklebreaker," shot locally on a Berklee rooftop. You can also check the rest of their EP here.

New Single: SOJA - Easier Ft. J Boog & Anuhea

New single from SOJA titled "Easier" featuring J Boog & Anuhea. Gotta say this is probably my favorite single Ive heard so far off of the upcoming album, Amid The Noise & Haste, set to drop in August. Heres a quote from lead singer Jacob Hemphill on the track:

"Easier is about how life is just for living and that happiness can be easily found, if we relax, look around, take a deep breath, see how beautiful everything is, realize that everything is alive and that we are all responsible for each other. The earth, the humans, the plants, the animals, were all one thing. The water, the wind, the dirt, the trees, were all there together. And it would be a lot easier if we didn't have to try to be something were not and if we didn't have to lie and say that were something were not. And I thought, who would understand that? Hawaiians. So I asked my friends J Boog and Anuhea to help rock the track."

Purchase on iTunes & support the movement! Aloha

Randy Valentine: "Break the Chain" EP

Randy Valentine's sophomore EP is hardly breaking news, having been released in April, but I had to be sure that everyone's sampled it by now.  So far, he has developed a reputation for high-energy, positive, conscious Reggae music, and this EP doesn't disappoint.  We were introduced to a few of the big tunes before the release, but he maintains consistent quality throughout -- "Carry On" is one of my new favorites.

This EP is selling for only $4.99 on iTunes which is such a steal. And how Randy Valentine has only 696 followers on his SoundCloud is beyond me..  This guy is bound to get some recognition one of these days!

Introducing: Natural High

Natural High is a newly established record label and dub sound hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, specializing in producing, recording, and mixing roots/dub music. The group made it's big debut  in 2013 on Lutan Fyah's most recent album, "Life of a King," which features three fully-produced tracks from the label. Their latest offering was just released on July 1st -- a single, "Live Forever," featuring rising star, Dre Island. The track boasts some raspy vocals - resembling a cross between Kymani and Damian Marley - a  heavy bass line, and a dub vibration that sounds like it has some subtle trance-type influence.

Up next for Natural High, they are expecting to release work featuring the likes of artists such as Jesse Royal, Chezidek, Jah Vinci, Lutan Fyah and more. In the meantime, you can preview their latest single above and pick up a copy for yourself on iTunes today.

Matisyahu - Akeda

Matisyahu recently dropped his 5th studio album titled Akeda. The music had some progressive sounds that definitely reach outside of reggae but he still had a couple that hooked me. "Built To Survive" featuring Zion I is probably my favorite track as well as the rootsy "Black Heart". You can purchase the album for yourself on iTunes. His music has changed along with his his image, but Id say overall he has still retained the positive message in his music. But don't take my word, check it for yourself!

KBong Releases Album: "Hopes And Dreams"

Back in January 2013, Rudeboy Reggae featured an introductory post to the talented, KBong, getting ready for his debut album in what hoped to be released springtime of that year.  What's the saying -- good things come to those who wait?  Well after listening to the album through, it strikes me as more of a summer album anyways!

My initial impression of Hopes and Dreams was that it was the epitome of feel-good, light Reggae music;  an album you could put on repeat and let it set the mood in the background.  After a few more listens, while I still find this to be true, I don't want it to be confused for lacking in substance.  KBong's debut full-length album masters the balance of varying sounds throughout to keep it enticing.  Reggae, "pop", heavy dub and baselines, catchy lyrics, some alternative and a touch of hip-hop can all be heard.  In the end, the vibe I continued to feel was positivity.

If you've met KBong, this positivity shouldn't come as a surprise; however, it is great to see it translated musically with his unique style.  Sure, he will be compared and tied to Stick Figure for his role on the keyboards, but in no way will that define him.  I'm personally excited to see what the future brings for KBong, and this album is a step in the right direction.

Hopes and Dreams drops on June 17th on iTunes.  Check out more of KBong HERE, and order the album HERE!!

Album Release: Tribal Seeds - Representing

What a journey its been for Tribal Seeds. Listening to the new album Representing, dropping nearly 10 years since the bands formation, its amazing to see how far not only Tribal Seeds has come but so many other aspects of the music. The new album reflects a band that seems to have finally realized their full potential as artists, creating music that not only sticks true to their original vibe but establishes themselves as American reggae heavyweights. Having helped pioneer the California reggae scene, Ive always admired Tribal Seeds for their unique sound that is grounded in roots and conscious yet contemporary lyrics. These guys have some slamming tracks, my favorite being "Lonely Night" though I was also stoked to see them team up with Virgin Islands reggae legends, Midnite, for the title track. Be sure to purchase your copy on iTunes and check these guys out on their Summer Tour with dates at tribalseeds.net. Much respect!

Ky-Mani Marley: Get High

Keeping the same vibe from Saturday's Popcaan post, here is another really tight, low-key dancehall track.  Although, this time from an unexpected artist:  Ky-Mani Marley.  You don't often hear Ky-Mani on too many dancehall beats, but like everything else he touches, it's fire.  Enjoy this new herbs-anthem with some loud bass where ever you are.

Popcaan: "Everything Nice"

If you haven't heard this track yet, you ought to get used to it, cus it's gonna be on radio and DJ repeat for a while to come. "Everything Nice" by Dancehall artist, Popcaan is BLAZING up the charts, and doesn't show any sign of slowing down. It's a super low key Dancehall track with a wildly catchy riddim and chorus -- I guarantee you'll find this one stuck in your head after listening.

Randy Valentine: "Break the Chain" Preview

Next up for this year's amazing run of Reggae albums, we bring you Randy Valentine!  "Break the Chain" is only his second EP and already comes with all sorts of expectations..  But that's what happens when you drop one of 2012's Best EP's out of nowhere!

RV decided to give us a taste, releasing a music video for the first single, "Sound the Alarm".  This song is definitely a change from his light-hearted, classic reggae vibe we've gotten to know — but in no way is it that a slight.  His conscious lyrics continue to impress, only with a more militant message and style behind it.  London poet, Lion Heart, certainly sets the tone, and RV keeps up the tempo with his signature tight flow.  To keep it a bit lighter, another sample track was also released, "Sweet Reggae Music".

This guy's got big things in his future, so you might as well familiarize yourself now!

Until the album drops on iTunes May 2, get yourself caught up HERE.

Reggae Artists Remix Pop

Here are some entertaining remixes to check out..  First Demarco does his interpretation of Lorde's hit, "Royal" with "Loyal" and then Ras Attitude and Perfect Giddimani keep it lighter with a cover of Beyonce's "Drunk in Love":   "Ganja Love".

New Single: Stephen Marley, "Rockstone"

"Cold ground was my bed last night, and rock was my pillow, too."
- Bob Marley, Talkin' Blues

In his latest single, "Rockstone," from his forthcoming album, "Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life," Stephen Marley gives a subtle nod to one of his father's best, lesser-known songs, "Talkin' Blues." And what a nod it is -- just Stephen Marley at his finest, really. Featuring the talents of modern reggae greats, Capleton and Sizzla voicing over a rootsy, hip-hop riddim, I have a feeling this song is sure to be a banger.

There are two things that really strike me with this song. The first is that Sizzla has finally put forth a quality vocal performance on something. I actually like him a lot on this record -- I'm having flashbacks to some of the hard hitting hip-hop-style music he was putting out back in the early 2000's --  which is contrary to how I've felt about anything he's touched for the past couple years. And secondly, the obvious thing to call out is Stephen's dubstep verse at the end of this track. We heard a lot of this dubstep influence on the somewhat recent Legend REMIXED album, which was largely produced by Stephen. So I'm left to wonder if we should expect to hear more of a dubstep presence on his upcoming album. I guess we'll have to see.

J Boog & Ziggi Recado Link Up!

I love this collaboration!!  Two of my favorite artists with very unique but complimentary voices bring us one of the slow jams of the year.  "The Way You Do" perfectly pairs J Boog's smooth vocals and Ziggi Recado's lyrical talents.  I haven't heard a lot from Ziggi recently so it's good to hear him come back in such a strong way.

You can find this track on Oneness Records' "One Love, One Heart, Oneness" which is on iTunes.
