New Single: Stephen Marley, "Rockstone"

"Cold ground was my bed last night, and rock was my pillow, too."
- Bob Marley, Talkin' Blues

In his latest single, "Rockstone," from his forthcoming album, "Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life," Stephen Marley gives a subtle nod to one of his father's best, lesser-known songs, "Talkin' Blues." And what a nod it is -- just Stephen Marley at his finest, really. Featuring the talents of modern reggae greats, Capleton and Sizzla voicing over a rootsy, hip-hop riddim, I have a feeling this song is sure to be a banger.

There are two things that really strike me with this song. The first is that Sizzla has finally put forth a quality vocal performance on something. I actually like him a lot on this record -- I'm having flashbacks to some of the hard hitting hip-hop-style music he was putting out back in the early 2000's --  which is contrary to how I've felt about anything he's touched for the past couple years. And secondly, the obvious thing to call out is Stephen's dubstep verse at the end of this track. We heard a lot of this dubstep influence on the somewhat recent Legend REMIXED album, which was largely produced by Stephen. So I'm left to wonder if we should expect to hear more of a dubstep presence on his upcoming album. I guess we'll have to see.

J Boog & Ziggi Recado Link Up!

I love this collaboration!!  Two of my favorite artists with very unique but complimentary voices bring us one of the slow jams of the year.  "The Way You Do" perfectly pairs J Boog's smooth vocals and Ziggi Recado's lyrical talents.  I haven't heard a lot from Ziggi recently so it's good to hear him come back in such a strong way.

You can find this track on Oneness Records' "One Love, One Heart, Oneness" which is on iTunes.

Gentleman & Alborosie: "Journey to Jah"

Big tune from two legendary European Reggae artists, Gentleman (Germany) and Alborosie (Italy)!!  These two are collaborating on a documentary film, titled "Journey to Jah" and this is the title-song for the film.  From the sounds of this tune and the trailer below, this project promises to be impressive!  Can't wait to see what more these guys give us!

Raging Fyah - Boarding Pass EP

Everyone needs to be counting down the days to April 1st at this point!  One of Jamaica's best Reggae bands, Raging Fyah, will be releasing the Boarding Pass EP as a follow-up to their unreal 2011 debut, Judgement Day.  With the help of Digital-B Records in Kingston, JA, this EP promises to be quality.  From the sounds of the two samples above ("Sunshine" & "Cold World"), these guys haven't lost a step!  Their sound is so unique and upbeat, it creates a special vibe that others are scrambling to replicate!

Roots Corner: Bruddah Waltah

Figured id start the week off with a roots refreshment. Bruddah Waltah is considered one of the fathers of Hawaiian Reggae and was one of the pioneers in what is now a flourishing sub-genre.  Had he not done what he had, who knows what our island music-scape would look like today. Its important to remember too that reggae was not so readily accepted back then, as it is today, since to some it was considered to be straying from Hawaiian music and playing something that was foreign. Regardless, can't go wrong with classics like "Sweet Lady of Waiahole." Amazing to hear how far modern reggae has come from some of these classics. Much Aloha to Bruddah Waltah for lighting the torch!

I-Octane New Album: My Journey

One of today's best modern Roots Reggae artists, I-Octane, just dropped his third full-length album, My Journey, on March 4.  With six EPs and endless amounts of singles as well, his resume should speak for itself.  When he releases an album, its an exciting time for Reggae!

Produced by the legendary Tad's Record, Inc., this album features a more Roots-Reggae vibe than his recent Dancehall-heavy, Jiggle Fi Me EP.  It seems whenever the production slows down you get a more personal feel from I-Octane, and that is something that happens throughout this album.  Also keep an ear out for guest artists, Gentleman, Ky-Mani Marley, and Alaine!

My favorite tunes so far are "Million Miles Away", "I Will Be There",  and "Jah Jah Mission". Check out Livity Movements album preview above or sample the entire album on iTunes!

BOOM TUNE OF THE WEEK

"Jr. Gong" Marley brings the conscious lyrics on his newest track, "Is It Worth It", for this weeks installment of Boom Tune of the Week.  You don't often see Damian on riddims like this, but when he joined Chronixx and Tarrus Riley on the 'Rootsman Riddim' it was time to pay attention.  Enjoy!

Major Lazer - Apocalypse Now

BOOM TUNE OF THE WEEK

Christopher Martin killed it on the Infatuation Riddim back in November 2013!  I was surprised this track, "Secret Love (Creep)" didn't blow up a little more to be honest, but I can't stop listening to it.  Also, keep an ear out for Jah Vinci on the same riddim.
