Matisyahu - Akeda

Matisyahu recently dropped his 5th studio album titled Akeda. The music had some progressive sounds that definitely reach outside of reggae but he still had a couple that hooked me. "Built To Survive" featuring Zion I is probably my favorite track as well as the rootsy "Black Heart". You can purchase the album for yourself on iTunes. His music has changed along with his his image, but Id say overall he has still retained the positive message in his music. But don't take my word, check it for yourself!

HawaiianReggae.org

Here at RudeboyReggae.com, we are dedicated not only to music but also education. We are proud to co-release the educational website developed through The University of Hawaii & The Center for Pacific Islands Studies that explores the impact of reggae music in Hawai'i. You can check it out at www.hawaiianreggae.org and learn, share, or contribute. The site has been a major endeavor over the past 6 months here at RudeboyReggae.com & part of the reason why the posts were slow these past few months. Now that the site has been published, we are back to focusing once again on sharing more music through this site. Massive thanks to all the artists, fans, & music industry people who supported the project and also thanks to our sponsors, Squarespace & Marley. Hopefully this resource will be used in the classrooms soon!!! P.S. The site is best viewed on a computer not a phone. Mahalo

KBong Releases Album: "Hopes And Dreams"

Back in January 2013, Rudeboy Reggae featured an introductory post to the talented, KBong, getting ready for his debut album in what hoped to be released springtime of that year.  What's the saying -- good things come to those who wait?  Well after listening to the album through, it strikes me as more of a summer album anyways!

My initial impression of Hopes and Dreams was that it was the epitome of feel-good, light Reggae music;  an album you could put on repeat and let it set the mood in the background.  After a few more listens, while I still find this to be true, I don't want it to be confused for lacking in substance.  KBong's debut full-length album masters the balance of varying sounds throughout to keep it enticing.  Reggae, "pop", heavy dub and baselines, catchy lyrics, some alternative and a touch of hip-hop can all be heard.  In the end, the vibe I continued to feel was positivity.

If you've met KBong, this positivity shouldn't come as a surprise; however, it is great to see it translated musically with his unique style.  Sure, he will be compared and tied to Stick Figure for his role on the keyboards, but in no way will that define him.  I'm personally excited to see what the future brings for KBong, and this album is a step in the right direction.

Hopes and Dreams drops on June 17th on iTunes.  Check out more of KBong HERE, and order the album HERE!!

Throwback Series: MidNite

One of the most well known bands to ever come out of The Virgin Islands, reggae heavyweights MidNite. Check out some of my favorite tracks above, though their discography is extensive. Ras Mek Peace and Intense Pressure are my top two albums. Lead singer, Vaughn Benjamin, also was featured on the title track of Tribal Seed's latest album, Representing. Conscious music, roots vibe, and dedication to the music. Respect!

Liquid Stranger: "Dive"

My prediction -- it's just a matter of time before you begin to hear Liquid Stranger's tune from the Anomaly One EP all over this years ski and snowboard videos.  "Dive" offers that unique mix of Reggae vibes with a high energy, electronic beat perfect for any edit.  Jahdan Blakkamoore's vocals kill it on this one and the intro sets it off right!
