Spiritual Warfare: Rasta Lion Culture Mix

I’m psyched to share one of the best mixes, from front to back, that I’ve heard in a long, long time. Titled, “Spiritual Warfare,” this 1.5-hour-long mix features the very best in modern roots reggae music over the past year. Most of the music in here I’ve heard before, but I’d say there was a solid 1/3 of this mix that I’d never come across. The sound system who produced this hails from Jerusalem, and they go by the name Rasta Lion. Be sure to check out some of their other mixes here

Ras Attitude, “Please Mr. Police”

I was lucky enough to stumble upon the end of Ras Attitude’s set the other night in Oakland, CA, as he was one of a handful of artists who opened up for Morgan Heritage at The New Parish. I was super impressed with his act – lots of energy, and his vocals are commanding (even with all of the bouncing around stage, he doesn’t miss a note).

This song, “Please Mr. Police” was one of the songs I caught, and it absolutely crushes live, even more than it does on this recorded track. I can’t stop listening to it. Great production. Killer vocals. Boom.

Single: Kabaka Pyramid - Well Done

“Well Done” is the latest single coming from one of Jamaica’s most promising rising stars, Kabaka Pyramid. The track was produced by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley  (so you know it’s gotta be good!) under the Ghetto Youths International label and released within the past month. Always love new music from this artist. For me, he ranks right up there next to some of my favorite contemporary artists. Hopefully there’s more to come!

Strike Gold Music: Gold Rush Riddim

Roots!! Roots!! Strike Gold Music just released the Gold Rush Riddim, and it couldn't be sweeter music to my ears!  They really brought it back with this one -- Lutan Fyah, Midnite, Fantan Mojah, and Natural Back are just a few artists that kill it on this riddim. It makes me reminiscent to years past when more quality roots riddims were like this -- simple and hard hitting.  Check out Jah-T Jr's riddim mix below for the full show of artists.

BOOM TUNE OF THE WEEK

Big herbs tune released on 4/20 from Keznamdi!!

Chris Martin: Stepping Razor EP

Chris Martin just dropped a new 5-track EP, Stepping Razor.  It's a quick compilation of mainly previously released tracks, but if there's ever an excuse to listen to Chris Martin, I'll take it.  And he's surprisingly able to bounce around between dancehall, pop, and roots/culture seemlessly throughout the small sample of tunes.  Go and check out the full EP here.

Protoje: Who Can You Call

Here's a big track from Protoje's album, Ancient Future: "Who Can You Call".  In a time when conscious lyrics seem to be left behind in the music industry, it is amazing to hear Protoje continue to deliver his message.

And do you think that with the last breath that you take
you'll be sitting thinking bout the money that you made.

Morgan Heritage Album Released: Strictly Roots

Don't say we didn't warn you!  Morgan Heritage released Strictly Roots, and as expected, it's absolute fire.  Reggaeville was nice enough to upload the entire album above, so who would I be to keep that from you all?  Of course, remember to support the band on iTunes and on tour though!

Short Film "Capture Land" by Nabil Elderkin!

Really sick short film titled CAPTURE LAND by Nabil Elderkin inspired by the words of the late Nelson Mandela, and the song 'Capture Land' by Jamaican artist Chronixx. The film was was shot in early November 2014 in Port Royal, Kingston - Jamaica. Presented by Montblanc, Capture Land was made as part of The Power of Words series. In partnership with the Tribeca Film Institute and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, this initiative inspires filmmakers to explore the written legacy of influential figures as a source of story and using film as a tool of education. Solid film. Great to see music intermixing more and more with film.

Randy Valentine: "Wake the Town" MV off "Keep Pushing" EP

Randy Valentine continues his tear! "Wake the Town" brings us more of the style I've grown to love -- old-school, rootsy production accompanied by quick-hitting, modern vocals.  This is the first music video released from his upcoming project, Keep Pushing. The 8-track EP, produced by Higher Hemp Productions and Ariwa Music, is set to be released on May 1st, so be sure to keep an ear out for that.

Morgan Heritage to Release New Album

The Royal Family of Reggae is back on the road again (though really I don't think they ever get off the road) promoting their forthcoming album, "Strictly Roots," and I couldn't be more stoked about it. Set to be released on April 20th, this 13-track collection is sure to be a great addition to the Morgan Heritage portfolio, featuring guest vocals from notable artists such as Chronixx, J Boog and Shaggy.

Below is the album single titled "Perform & Done," which has been around for a little while at this point, but is just now gaining some traction again in anticipation of the album release next week.

Pre-order your copy of Strictly Roots today (for only $5.99!), and be sure to check out this amazing live act when it comes through your city.

Silly Walks Discotheque: Ram Jam Riddim

Silly Walks Discotheque is one of those sound systems that you always have to keep an eye out for.  When they drop a riddim, you pay attention!   So with the announcement that they will be releasing Ram Jam Riddim on April 17, I want to make sure that everyone is prepared.  Check out the megamix above to see what you think, but it is impossible to not enjoy this feel-good riddim.  The big artists are Shaggy, Chronixx, Protoje, and Exco Levi, but don't be surprised if some of the others make an impression as well.

Dancehall Sings Riddim

Zj Chrome at CR203 Productions brings us two versions of the the Dancehall Sings Riddim -- the Lovers Edition and Roots Edition. Both are the same artists, with the same tracks, of course with a different feel on the riddim. Some of dancehall's biggest names represent on this riddim -- Chris Martin, Konshens, Alkaline, I Octane, Bugle, Demarco, and more -- so you know it's worth checking out. Decide for yourself which version you like better!

Six60 Release New Album: "Six60 (Deluxe)"

One of our New Zealand favorites, Six60, just dropped a brand new full length album titled Six60 (Deluxe) on February 27th!  We aren't able to download it yet on US iTunes, but it has already received high praise on the NZ charts:  opening at #1 on album chart, and having 13 singles on the NZ singles chart, including the #1 spot for "So High".  For anyone that can get your hands on this album -- go for it!

The thing that I love about these guys is their ability to change sounds.  "Last Ones Left" keeps it mellow, but be sure to expect some higher energy tracks throughout the album also.  They will bring out their Reggae roots, while able to show off their pop side as well.  Enjoy!
